Perimenopause Doesn't Have to Be
Such a Struggle.
You're in your 40s — maybe your late 30s. Your periods have started doing unexpected things. You're waking at 3am drenched in sweat, or lying awake with a mind that won't stop. You snap at your kids or your partner and then feel terrible about it. You walk into a room and forget why you're there. You feel anxious in a low-grade, persistent way that's new and hard to explain. You're exhausted in a way that sleep doesn't seem to fix.
And when you mention any of this to your doctor, you hear some version of: "This is normal. It's just hormones. It will pass."
Which is true. And also, completely unhelpful.
Perimenopause can last anywhere from two to twelve years. You don't have to just endure it. There is so much that can be done to help your body navigate this transition with more ease, more energy, and more of yourself intact.
WHAT IS PERIMENOPAUSE, EXACTLY?
Perimenopause is the phase that precedes menopause — the years during which your ovaries gradually produce less estrogen and progesterone, and your body begins its transition away from the reproductive years. It is not a disease or a dysfunction. It is a natural and inevitable hormonal shift.
But natural doesn't mean easy. As estrogen and progesterone fluctuate — sometimes wildly — before eventually declining, they take a great deal with them: your sleep, your mood, your metabolism, your skin, your libido, your ability to tolerate stress. In Chinese medicine, this transition is understood as a profound redistribution of the body's vital energy, and it is one of the conditions that acupuncture and herbal medicine are uniquely well suited to address.
YOU MIGHT BE IN PERIMENOPAUSE IF YOU'RE EXPERIENCING:
-
Hot flashes or night sweats
-
Sleep disruption — difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early
-
Irregular, heavier, or more painful periods
-
Mood changes — irritability, anxiety, sadness, or emotional volatility that feels unlike you
-
Brain fog, forgetfulness, or difficulty concentrating
-
Fatigue that doesn't improve with rest
-
Low libido or vaginal dryness
-
Weight changes, especially around the midsection
-
Heart palpitations
-
Joint pain or stiffness
-
Thinning hair or changes in skin texture
You may have a few of these, or many. Every woman's experience of perimenopause is different — which is exactly why a one-size-fits-all approach rarely works, and why the individualized nature of Chinese medicine is so well matched to this stage of life.
HOW ACUPUNCTURE AND CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE HELP
Chinese medicine has been supporting women through the menopausal transition for thousands of years. The symptoms of perimenopause map closely onto well-established patterns in TCM — particularly what is known as Kidney Yin deficiency, which describes a depletion of the cooling, nourishing, and stabilizing energy that keeps the body in balance. When we treat perimenopause with acupuncture and herbal medicine, we are not suppressing symptoms or replacing hormones — we are helping the body recalibrate from within.
Here is what that looks like in practice:
-
Hot flashes and night sweats — acupuncture regulates the autonomic nervous system and helps stabilize the thermoregulatory fluctuations that cause flushing and sweating. Many patients notice a significant reduction in frequency and intensity within just a few weeks of treatment
-
Sleep — by calming the nervous system and addressing the underlying patterns (often heat, anxiety, or heart imbalance in TCM terms) that cause nighttime waking, acupuncture helps restore deep, restorative sleep
-
Mood and anxiety — acupuncture has a measurable effect on cortisol and serotonin levels, helping to smooth the emotional volatility and low-grade anxiety that many perimenopausal women experience
-
Brain fog and fatigue — by improving circulation and supporting the adrenal system — which takes on increased hormonal work during perimenopause — acupuncture helps restore mental clarity and sustained energy
-
Hormonal regulation — acupuncture supports the endocrine system's ability to adapt to shifting hormonal demands, helping to smooth out the peaks and valleys that cause so many symptoms
-
Chinese herbal medicine — customized herbal formulas can work continuously between sessions, extending and deepening the treatment effect. Herbal medicine is particularly powerful for perimenopausal symptoms and can be tailored precisely to your pattern and constitution
CAN I DO THIS ALONGSIDE HRT?
Yes. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine work beautifully alongside hormone replacement therapy for women who choose it. Many of my patients are on HRT and find that acupuncture helps address the symptoms that HRT alone doesn't fully resolve — sleep disruption, anxiety, and fatigue being the most common. If you are considering HRT, I encourage you to have that conversation with your gynecologist; my role is to support your body holistically alongside whatever path you choose.
THE RESEARCH
A growing body of evidence supports acupuncture for perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms. Studies have demonstrated meaningful reductions in hot flash frequency and severity, improvements in sleep quality, reductions in anxiety and depression scores, and improvements in overall quality of life — without the risks associated with pharmaceutical interventions. For women who cannot or choose not to use HRT, acupuncture offers a clinically credible, evidence-based alternative.
I think perimenopause is one of the most underserved seasons of a woman's life. So much of the cultural conversation around this transition is either dismissive — "it's just hormones" — or alarmist. Neither is helpful. What I see in my practice, every day, is women who are capable, vibrant, and deeply committed to their lives and the people they love — and who are exhausted from fighting their own bodies.
You are not broken. Your body is doing something hard, and it needs support. I would love to be part of what helps you not just survive this transition, but genuinely thrive through it.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Your first visit will include a thorough intake covering your full symptom picture, health history, cycle history, sleep, stress levels, and anything else that helps me understand your unique pattern. Treatment plans for perimenopause typically involve weekly sessions to start, with many patients spacing out to biweekly or monthly maintenance once symptoms are well managed. Herbal medicine is often recommended alongside acupuncture for faster, more sustained results.
You deserve to feel like yourself again — maybe even better than before.
