When new clients ask me, “What should I expect to feel after my acupuncture treatment?” I always tell them that they should plan on having a great night’s sleep.  This is because acupuncture taps into your parasympathetic nervous system, allowing your body to relax deeply, more deeply than most people can achieve through mindfulness and meditation.  Several randomized, controlled clinical trials have been completed over the past 15 years, and each one of them has shown a significant improvement in sleep after acupuncture (Hachul et. al., Wang et. al., Zhao et. al.).  This includes chronic insomnia sufferers, as well as those affected by peri-and post-menopausal insomnia.

How Many Treatments Will You Need?

To determine how many acupuncture treatments you will need to alleviate your insomnia, first think back to how long you have been experiencing insomnia.  Has it been weeks?  A month?  Several years?  The longer you have been suffering with insomnia, the more acupuncture treatments it will take to get your body back into balance again.  Usually, for every year that you have been experiencing insomnia, it takes one month to get you back into balance with acupuncture.  For example, if you only just started noticing that you are not sleeping well, and you are in peri-menopause, acupuncture will quickly sort out your sleep in only 3-5 treatments.  If you have chronic insomnia that you have been dealing with for 6 years, plan on receiving regular acupuncture treatments for up to 6 months to restore restful sleep patterns.  Remember, acupuncture is not magic!  It works with your body to gradually shift you back into a balanced rhythm.  If you feel discouraged at the thought of committing to 6 months of acupuncture treatments, I encourage you to consider how much your quality of life and overall health will improve after your sleep is regulated.

Why is sleep so important?

During the time we are sleeping, our bodies are doing lots of hard work!  We grow new cells, bank memories, and produce the hormones that regulate all of our bodies’ functions.  Without a proper amount of sleep, which varies between individuals from 6-10 hours, depending on how exhausted we have allowed our bodies to become, the processes that keep us healthy and thriving start to malfunction.  We experience mood instability, blood sugar issues, dull skin and hair, and even abnormal cell growth.  Sleep is paramount in living a long and healthy life, so I encourage you to make sleep a priority.
